Since it is slight more aggressive, microdermabrasion can be used to treat irregularities in the texture of the skin, fine wrinkles and superficial scarring. Microdermabrasion involves, ‘sanding’ of the skin with small microscopic crystals made of aluminum oxide, similar to grains of sand on a beach. A high-powered instrument passes the crystals over the surface of the skin and then removes them quickly to ‘buff’ the skin irregularities. Changes are repeated at one to two week intervals. Six to eight sessions are usually suggested for optimal results. There is minimal redness of the skin after each treatment, which usually subsides within about 30-60 minutes, so there is little down time associated with the procedure.
